Dr. Tania C. Nkungula, DDS

President, Chair of the Board of Directors | Co-Founder

Dr. Tania C. Nkungula, DDS, is a Malawianborn, board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon based in Washington, DC, whose career bridges surgical excellence, trauma care, education, and global humanitarian service. She serves as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, one of the region’s busiest Level II trauma centers, where she leads complex facial trauma care and multidisciplinary surgical collaboration. Dr. Nkungula is also the founder of Washington Oral Surgery Center, a practice recognized for advanced implantology and complex surgical care. Her private office proudly serves as a designated Trauma Clinic, where senior residents from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center provide post-trauma continuity care—reflecting her deep commitment to mentorship, education, and service beyond the operating room.

The genesis of Dr. Nkungula’s humanitarian work is deeply personal. Smiling Surgeons, Inc. was founded in loving honor of her late brother, Miko Nkungula, whose life and legacy continue to inspire a mission rooted in compassion, dignity, and hope. What began during Trauma Clinic—co-founded with Dr. Shelby Curtis —has grown into a global health nonprofit that both honors legacy and provides a structured avenue for healthcare volunteers to unite in the delivery of safe, high-quality surgical and dental care in underserved communities, beginning in Malawi.

In Malawi, Dr. Nkungula works closely with Dr. James Mchenga, the country’s only oral and maxillofacial surgeon serving a population of more than 21 million people and the acting head of the nation’s first dental school at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). Together, they share a long-term vision: not only to deliver care, but to build capacity, train future specialists, and strengthen local systems so that care becomes sustainable, locally led, and enduring.

Smiling Surgeons operates under a Five-Year Rolling Plan guided by three foundational operational pillars:

  • Annual Specialized and Complex Surgical Missions – Delivering advanced surgical and dental care through recurring missions, mobile clinics, and emergency interventions for patients with limited or no access to care.
  • Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Strengthening – Supporting reliable access to essential medications through partnerships, donation pipelines, and accountability-driven distribution systems.
  • Medical Equipment, Infrastructure, and Distribution – Establishing durable equipment pipelines, mobile clinics, and facility-based infrastructure to support long-term care delivery and training.

In 2024, Smiling Surgeons marked a major milestone by acquiring and shipping a school bus—donated to Kamuzu University of Health Sciences—for conversion into a mobile dental and surgical clinic, expanding access to care for rural and remote communities. Smiling Surgeons is part of the Malawi Initiatives, a North American Diaspora community that works in partnership with Project CURE, Islamic Relief USA, UPS Foundation and numerous donor; as well as Malawian Professionals in-country – the Patriots, Rotarians and other government agencies in bringing containers of medical equipment and supplies to Malawi.

Over the next five years, the organization aims to scale its impact through repeat missions, expanded volunteer engagement, workforce training, mobile care delivery, and the development of resilient healthcare infrastructure across Malawi. This regional vision includes plans for a floating clinic on Lake Malawi , extending care and collaboration across borders to Mozambique and Tanzania, reflecting a shared commitment to service, partnership, and regional health equity.

Beyond surgery, Dr. Nkungula is a storyteller, mentor, and global citizen. She speaks several languages, enjoys traveling with her family, and holds a lifelong vision of providing care across the African continent—including a dream journey from Cape to Cairo, offering dental and surgical services along the way. In her private practice, she is passionate about restoring form, function, and confidence through dental implants, guided by a philosophy that compassionate care and surgical excellence are inseparable. Through her leadership, Smiling Surgeons stands as both a tribute to a beloved brother and a promise to future generations —transforming lives not only one smile at a time, but one nation at a time.
